The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.”
One would have to be foolish to think there is no God, but equally foolish are those who act like there is no God in spite of what they profess to believe.
They are corrupt and have done abominable iniquity;
The psalmist doesn’t just say they have committed iniquity but rather that they have done abominable iniquity. Merriam-Webster defines abominable as: “worthy of or causing disgust or hatred : detestable.” A fool does some pretty bad things, but, as Jesus pointed out in Matthew 5:22 and 28, sin is not just what we do. It can also be what we think, imagine, or dwell on. You can clean up nicely and look like a great Christian on Sunday morning, but God sees what people cannot.
There is none who does good.
One of the saddest verses in the Bible is Luke 18:8: Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He really find faith on the earth? After everything God has done for us, why do we doubt Him? I understand that unbelievers can be blinded to His works, but professing Christians can be as well.
When we read Scripture, it’s easy to think of others, but we need to examine ourselves, to know where we stand with the Lord. When Jesus returns, will He find faith in us, or will we be acting like fools? Let’s pray it’s not the latter.
